Dystopia Mumble Voice Chat Server

Postby Hyphen-ated » Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:34 am

Hey everybody. We have a Mumble server at mumble.dystopia-game.com port 64738 (this is the default port). Mumble is a voice chat program, like Ventrilo but better in several ways.

You can get it from http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

We used to have a community ventrilo server and it was pretty cool that people hung out there a lot; let's have that kind of thing again. If you want to use this server for your clan's voice chat, contact me (Hyphen-ated) and I'll hook you up with administrative rights to a channel.

One thing: I highly recommend you use the "users above channels" option because the Mumble interface is a little confusing otherwise. (you have to check "advanced" first before it will show up)

Yay, I've been playing around with mumble and its really sweet.
Its way better than ventrilo imo, and plus its free!
There's pretty much every feature you could ask for in mumble.

Maybe now there will be shoutcasts again?

Hooray for mumble. Though i do not understand whats confusing about it. I actually never used "user above channels" option, though i'm using almost exclusively and quite extensively mumble. But hooray for mumble!

This is the default. I am in channel "nb" but it looks like I'm in "nb private"!

This is with "users above channels." Much better.

And actually the default is even worse when someone is in the "Root" channel because then it looks almost like they are in "nb private"!

Positional audio worked before with Dystopia, though it wasn't that helpful and more distracting for everyone i know. Maybe it has something to do with the current version of the plugin/mumble, or, if it works for others, with your computer. Long time since i tried it.

Positional audio seems silly, it's certainly not necessary with only 5 people in a room, but it could be really cool for shoutcasts.

channels for dgl eu and dgl us

then some sub-channels like:

team 1/team 2

etc

cool for pugs/matches/spectators or whatever, not really needed but anyway.

It's true. The CELT codec used by Mumble has about a third to half the amount of codec-induced latency as other codecs like GSM and Speex that Vent and Teamspeak use, and what's more, Vent and Teamspeak have a lot more buffering going on behind the scenes that drastically increase the amount of actual audible latency. In my experience, Vent/TS can add up to a third of a second, while Mumble only adds about a tenth of a second. You get WAY less of people stepping on each other because they didn't hear the other guy start talking yet, and a lot less hearing the warning after the event that you were being warned about.

When you're playing a game, people to your left in game sound like they're to your left, people to your right sound like they're to your right, etc. It's like magic. Never used it in Dystopia, but used it in the PR mod for BF2, where it allows you to run up to people and yell at them, just like in real life.

It's also good if you're in a game and on mumble with lots and lots of people as people far away will be whisper quiet. This makes it good for squad play etc and adds to that realism but then again, who needs realism? :P
