Y'know... Just incase something goes wrong.

He is a god of Fate, you know (or close enough - he's basically a transcendent being who can fuck with probability).

Also whole G-man thing is probably most intriguing plot trick in whole gaming history. I'm not really into episodes but I think I just might grab some to see how it all ends.

This is what I love about HL/HL2 - the metaplot. The games themselves give you fuck all plot, but think about it for a second - you're practically average Joe; the only thing that distinguishes you from everyone else is your MIT degree and that powered exosuit with electroactive ballistic armour and automated medical station installed; and even then, in HL1, it was just the suit - all the scientists had the same level of education, if not better. You're not meant to get the bigger picture.
This is compounded tenfold by the fact that Earth is just a shitty backwater world (and I do mean dimension, not planet - you thought the Milky Way was big, let alone the universe? Well, think again; turns out there are things out there much, much bigger than your tiny galaxy) by the standards of the real political power players at large - pandimensional empires like the Combine, who've been harvesting entire planets and populations for an undetermined yet presumably long time, and whoever's out there with the power, money and balls to oppose them semi-directly. It's a brilliant piece of design.

It's a brilliant piece of evading plot and having enough leanway to come up with any twist and turn you want artifically elongating a lifeless string of setpieces without any purpose. every episode until now introduced a mac guffin, the thing you are after or fleeing from, one of the most over-used and unimaginative devices in storytelling. next up: voice-over. oh, wait. we already got that.
