The Laser Rifle fires a very high-power laser beam that must first be charged up by holding down the primary fire. The charge increases to a maximum power over 3 seconds, at which the Laser Rifle does full damage when the primary fire is released; if released before or after the maximum it will do diminished damage. The more charged the shot, the greater the energy ammunition consumed. If it is not released, it charges down over 1.5 seconds and no energy ammunition is consumed. The laser beam is visible as a glowing red line as it charges. It is perfectly accurate, has unlimited range, and hits instantly when primary fire is released.

The Laser Rifle does very little damage at close range, ramping up to full damage over a fairly short distance. So at close range and low charge, it does minimal damage. At longer range and full charge, it does a tremendous amount of damage.

The slow rate of fire, tremendous damage, and extremely high zoom capability make the Laser Rifle a fantastic sniper weapon, but much less effective at short range.

Usage Guidelines

  • Hold the primary fire button to charge up the Laser Rifle, and release it to fire.
  • The beam charges up to its maximum strength, then back down to zero. Release the button as near as possible to the maximum charge (achieved after 3 seconds, when the pitch of the noise is highest and the visible beam is brightest).
  • Once the weapon reaches a full charge, you will only have about 1/4 of a second to fire before the gun overheats and begins cooling down.
  • The secondary fire activates the Laser Rifle's zoom function.
  • While zoomed in, you can change the zoom level by moving the mousewheel up or down (zoom in and out, respectively).

Tips and Tricks

  • The Laser Rifle's damage drops off rapidly at close range, making the Katana or Machine Pistol far more useful alternatives. However, over long ranges the Laser Rifle can be incredibly effective at suppressing and intimidating enemies, forcing them into hiding or alternate routes.
  • Remember to be aware of your surroundings whilst zoomed in, as any enemies will be looking to surprise you and close the distance as quickly as possible.
  • Thermal Vision can be useful for brightening the silhouettes of distant enemies, but beware of Coldsuit users. Similarly, using the coldsuit yourself can make you a more difficult target to locate.
  • A fully charged Laser Rifle headshot inflicts the most damage of any weapon. However, in many cases this is not even necessary. A charged body shot will kill a light, and a headshot or two body shots will take down a medium. Although Heavies are very difficult to headshot, their large bulk and slow speed make them the easiest of targets in any case, so a few body shots tends to suffice.
  • The user's stealthed position can be given away if the Laser Rifle is used, as the red beam will point to your location.
  • Hide behind an object and quickly pop out at maximum charge to reduce the warning enemies get from the charge laser.
  • Thermal Vision makes the beam near invisible, forcing you to rely on the sound to fire at maximum charge. Sound Suppressor makes this impossible, so consider this when using these implants.
  • You can only carry enough ammunition for seven max-charge shots. Keep an eye on your ammunition supply, and run back for more at an appropriate time.
